  • Family doctor. You may decide to see a family practice specialist. They are trained in treating people of all ages and understand how to treat women in menopause. They tend to deal a lot in the care of very old people so the treatment of menopause might be something they consider out of there sphere of knowledge because most women are done with menopause by the time they reach 60. This is usually one of the younger ages of people that a gerontologist deals with. Talk to the doctor to see if he or she is familiar with the issues related to menopause and if they have or are currently treating women who are undergoing menopause. Some of them will be comfortable with it, while others might not be as comfortable.
  • General practitioner. This is a type of doctor a lot like an internist or family practitioner in that they deal with people of all different types of medical concerns and with people of all ages. They understand female hormones and can prescribe female hormones for menopause if that’s the route you want to go. They can also manage your other female issues, such as needing mammograms and having Pap tests. The gynecologist sees women of all ages, including menopausal women.
